I all of a sudden have migraines?Diagnosis and prevention help?

J Johnson asked:

Last Friday I started getting a sore throat, and by Saturday I realized I had a small cold. Just a sore throat and cough with the gross phlegm.
By Monday morning I was mostly better, but at night I started getting a headache above my left eyebrow, and whenever I leaned forward it made it worst.

I thought it was another symptom of my cold, but tuesday morning it was gone.
Around 7 that night it came back, worst than the day before.

Exact same thing happened Wednesday, and today. It leaves in the morning and comes back at night.

I talked to my mom and she said it could be migraines, or a sinus problem, due to my lack of sleep (I’ve been getting around 6 hours of sleep a night due to a senior project).

Do you guys think my migraines were triggered by my lack of sleep, or cold? I’m just worried these headaches will continue forever because it doesn’t seem like it’s going away.

Any way to relieve this pain?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys
Both of you helped so much, if this doesn’t go away by Monday I’ll definitely see a doctor.

Thanks a lot guys.

    Migrainces Classification

Since you are sick and have never had migraines in the past, it is more likely that what you are experiencing is severe sinus headaches, which can sometimes be just as bad as a migraine. If you find that you still get the headaches after you are completely over the cold, then you need to go and see a neurologist. They will run some basic tests and MRI to rule out anything serious like a tumor. They will then start trying you out on abortive migraine medications until they find one that works for you. If you get them several times per week, they may also start you on a preventative medication that reduces the frequency and severity of migraines and reduces your dependency on abortive medicines. For now, just try to get through the sinus infection. If they continue or get worse after it is all better, then you need to see the doctor.

    Migraine Diagnosis

Yes, a cold can def. bring on migraines. But it seems that if you are having phlegm, cold symptoms, pressure/pain above the eyebrow, and if it’s worse when you lean over, it seems like you have sinusitis (sinus infection/ inflammation of the sinuses). The sinuses above the eyebrows or in your forehead are the frontal sinuses. Also the maxillary sinuses (above the teeth, below the cheek bones) can cause pressure and migraine-like headaches too. I would bet money that you have a frontal sinus infection. The lack of sufficient sleep you are getting can make things so much worse b/c your body is trying to heal and fight off the infection, but it’s trying to keep other functions going too. You should seriously think about going to see a Dr. to at least get a RX for an antibiotic. I’m sure it will make those headaches disappear if they are from the infection. Good Luck to you, I hope this helps!

    Headaches

I occasionally used to get headaches in a similar area. They do appeared to be set off by stress, lack of sleep and poor neck posture. A cold at the same time stresses the body and hits on any week spots – in this case right above your eyes and nose.

Massage around that area with your fingers as well as put pressure on that one area and hold for a few seconds. This can help loosen up the sinuses. Also, try to relax and catch up with your sleep. Lastly, most headaches start out in the neck so use a good neck pillow for sleeping for awhile. This pillow should help and it may also possition the neck so the sinuses have good air flow:
