Facts On Obesity
Saturday, June 19th, 2010There is a new obsession in the world today. And that topic is the one that concerns a person’s weight. And with good enough reason as research says that one in every three American between the ages of 20 and 74 is overweight, which is about 58 million of the people in the country. What is the difference between being overweight and being obese? Let’s look at some obesity facts.
Being overweight basically means having excess body weight in the form of muscle, fat, water and bone in the body. Your weight is compared to other, average, weights of a person of the same gender, height and build, and you are then considered either overweight or not. Being obese is when only the body fat is measured, and it is found to be more than what a normal person of the same age, gender and height has in that given environment. Many people who are overweight need not necessarily be obese as well, as body fat is not the only contributor to body weight. Practically however, the chances of an overweight person being obese are much higher.
There are some obesity fact that are quite shocking. Many diseases are shown to have begun from the problem of obesity in a person, which is certainly a fact to consider. Facts that show how obesity can double the risk of high blood pressure in a person, or that nearly 70% of heart disease patients are also obese are indeed some outrageous facts. These obesity facts are quite scary huh?
What could be the causes for obesity?. One very obvious answer would be the poor eating habits that some people tend to follow for reasons like convenience, cost and sometimes pure laziness. But there could be other reasons as well which lead to a person becoming obese. There are some anti depressant drugs that are said to have after effects of causing obesity in a person, while many disease conditions like hypothyroidism has also caused people to gain weight suddenly and become obese. Another factor that could lead to obesity has been shown to be genetics. Many obesity facts show that for some reason or the other, there are a few of us who are more inclined towards being overweight and obese than others.
