Facts On Obesity

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

There is a new obsession in the world today. And that topic is the one that concerns a person’s weight. And with good enough reason as research says that one in every three American between the ages of 20 and 74 is overweight, which is about 58 million of the people in the country. What is the difference between being overweight and being obese? Let’s look at some obesity facts.

Being overweight basically means having excess body weight in the form of muscle, fat, water and bone in the body. Your weight is compared to other, average, weights of a person of the same gender, height and build, and you are then considered either overweight or not. Being obese is when only the body fat is measured, and it is found to be more than what a normal person of the same age, gender and height has in that given environment. Many people who are overweight need not necessarily be obese as well, as body fat is not the only contributor to body weight. Practically however, the chances of an overweight person being obese are much higher.

There are some obesity fact that are quite shocking. Many diseases are shown to have begun from the problem of obesity in a person, which is certainly a fact to consider. Facts that show how obesity can double the risk of high blood pressure in a person, or that nearly 70% of heart disease patients are also obese are indeed some outrageous facts. These obesity facts are quite scary huh?

What could be the causes for obesity?. One very obvious answer would be the poor eating habits that some people tend to follow for reasons like convenience, cost and sometimes pure laziness. But there could be other reasons as well which lead to a person becoming obese. There are some anti depressant drugs that are said to have after effects of causing obesity in a person, while many disease conditions like hypothyroidism has also caused people to gain weight suddenly and become obese. Another factor that could lead to obesity has been shown to be genetics. Many obesity facts show that for some reason or the other, there are a few of us who are more inclined towards being overweight and obese than others.

Precisely What Causes Acid Reflux?

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Acid reflux is an extreme swelling of the esophagus triggered by a regurgitation ( or tried regurgitation ) of the belly’s contents.  It is a leading sign of heart burn that effects roughly one out of each 10 adults each day.  The feeling of burning round the heart is sometimes known as heartburn and is one of the many acid reflux symptoms.  The best way to dump the speedy symptoms of acid reflux is to take an acid reflux tablet.

Though the root causes are usually confusing, perhaps the most common acid reflux cause is a poor diet.  Acid reflux occurs during digestion, when the stomach churns up acid or refluxes it into the esophagus, causing a sensation of burning in the chest or throat.  So if you eat too many highly acidic foods like tomato sauces and / or fatty, fried foods, the belly has to process a surplus of acid.  Too much acid can push back thru a valve between the gut and the esophagus called the lower esophageal sphincter ( LES ).  Acid reflux culprits include but aren’t limited to tomato based sauces, fried and fatty foods, chocolate, alcohol, citrus fruits, peppers, and caffeinated beverages.

Along the same lines as diet, overeating also causes reflux.  When you eat too much, the stomach can not keep up with the demand to process all of the acids.  So food gets backed up, and digestive acids infiltrate the esophageal valve to cause that unpleasant burning feeling centered in the chest.

Also diet-related, another acid reflux cause is being overweight.  There’s a clear relationship between being overweight and a notable increase in the incidence of acid reflux.  Many think this is because the extra weight puts more stress on the stomach and esophagus.  This pressure has been known to open the lower esophageal sphincter ( esophagus valve ), when the valve should be closed.  This permits acid to flee into the esophagus.

Other considerations that make a predisposition for acid reflux include smoking, use of alcohol, food allergies, certain medications, and lying down after meals.  As you can tell, many of these factors can be overwhelmed by practicing some behavior modifications.  In fact, in several cases of recurrent acid reflux, life changes are all that is mandatory in preventing heartburn from becoming a chronic disease.  Do not forget to consult a consultant before embarking on any treatment technique.

Get Relief From Osteoarthritis To Enjoy Life Once Again

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Arthritis is a painful condition that may stop you from doing the things that you love. The pain of this condition can affect almost any and every joint of the body. It most often affects the hands, knees, hips, neck and also the lower back. The condition gets worse over time and no cure is known. There are, however, treatments that can bring pain relief and help the patient become active once again.

Researchers have not been able to pin down the actual cause of osteoarthritis, however the condition may have several contributing factors. Those factors can include aging, heredity, injury, weak muscles and being overweight.

The condition usually does not begin to be apparent until after age forty. It is more likely to develop in women than in men. Sports injuries are often one of the risk factors for developing osteoarthritis. In addition, a job that puts more stress on the joints is also a factor in developing the disease.

As time passes, osteoarthritis can become worse. Pain at times can be so severe that a person is no longer able to work or even enjoy their hobbies. The disease may progress to the point that your doctor suggests joint replacement surgery.

Several medications do help with the disease. Some of these are available over the counter and include acetaminophen that helps with pain, NASIDs that help with both pain relief and to relieve swelling. Ibuprofen is a NASID.

Doctors may also prescribe medications that include Tramadol or stronger pain killers such as Darvon or a codeine containing product. Cortisone shots are also found to be useful in some patients.

Glucosamine, a naturally occurring substance is sometimes useful in the early stages of osteoarthritis. It has been shown to be without side effects in several studies and is available at Costco as Kirkland glucosamine. This affordable product has brought relief to many patients.

Once you find relief for the pain caused by arthritis, you will begin to feel better. You may feel so much better that you decide to pick up an old hobby that has been laid aside due to your pain from arthritis.

It may be time to dust off the old dreadnought acoustic guitar and play a few tunes or get together with the old garage band again. Fingers that had lost their flexibility may once again be nimble enough to play like a young rock star.

On the other hand, perhaps you have given up video games. When you start feeling better, you need to find the ps2 transformers, because you are going to show the grandkids how a video game should be played.
